Andrew Nikolics (1937-2008) - When he was admitted into the Toronto East General Hospital in July, 2008, Andrew arrived with 30 paintings rolled up in suitcases. Bold, and colourful, the artwork speaks well for a man who apparently did not associate himself with many friends or relatives.   As a young man, Andrew came to Canada from Budapest, Hungary. Along with his friend, Erno, he traveled to Canada in search of a better life. He was only 29 years old, and an artist since childhood.

"I am living in Canada for 40 years," Andrew is quoted in a book of Hungarian artists living in the West. "I have (painted) all my life."   With help from hospital staff including nurses, doctors and social workers, Andrew's wish was delivered to fellow artist, Ida Tong, and finally brought his dream to fruition. Ida organized and made an exhibition possible for Andrew at the hospital, two days before Andrew passed away. He was in total peace.

Andrew happily and generously agreed to have the proceeds of all of his work donated to charity. The Scarborough Arts Council is honoured to receive his gift.   Andrew Nikolics was born on April 3rd, 1937 in Hungary and died in Toronto on September 22nd, 2008.
